Unforgettable Moment
An Unforgettable Moment

I could feel the tension in the air on Friday night, January 30. The Leakey Eagle basketball teams and their entourage of fans traveled to the home gym of the Utopia Buffalo. Even though many from both towns are friendly acquaintances, basketball season brings rivalry to a different level.

Eagle fans surrounded me dressed in their red, armed with their spirit towels, lining the bleachers on one side of the gym, and ready to cheer for their champions. The other side of the gym was filled to capacity with the Maroon and Gold fans of the Mighty Buffs who were eager to celebrate their Homecoming Festivities.

Pregame activities included the introduction of the opposing teams. I stood at attention with all the other fans, all hats removed, and our hands over our hearts as the speaker system began to play the Star Spangled Banner. Midway through the selection the speaker system ceased to function. Immediately, it became evident that these small town folks were beaming with pride for their country. Voices began to resonate from both sides of the gymnasium. Young, old, male female.......never a note was missed.

Tears came to my eyes at this moment of unison between the two tiny Texas towns. I was so proud that the parents have built a tradition of American Pride into their children for generations that will be the future of this country. Regardless of the outcome of the games, the true victory was won.
