LEAKEY ISD CELEBRATES GENERATION TEXAS WEEK
Submitted by Shirley Sliter, Counselor
GenTX is a statewide movement focused on creating a culture of college and career readiness that leads to the most successful generation in Texas history. In compliance with HB2909, the week of Jan 2-6th was designated as Leakey’s Generation TX week. Helpful websites for parents and students include www.CollegeForAllTexans.com and www.GenerationTX.com . Another great site is www.RealityCheck.com which is an interactive website that helps kids get a grasp about how much things cost after high school.
Leakey School had several activities to celebrate the week. Tuesday, five college students donated some of their early morning time to talk with elementary students and Seniors. Thanks to Zoe Davis, Crystal Collins, Meagan Clark, Michael Breshears, and Sara Breshears for giving us the inside track on college. The most frequent remark they made was about being prepared for the amount of studying required in college. Leakey EMS volunteers Donna Cone, Sherry Sollers, Karen Barnum, and Chris Elmore visited on Wednesday with information on training, education and schooling required. The EMS team took students through an emergency call scenario from initial call to transport. They stressed the importance to students that they be aware of their 911 address.
Administrators Jim Hesson, Supt. and Rusty Baldwin, Principal visited each grade level and discussed the importance of post secondary education as well as relating a couple of anecdotes of their own. Teachers and students wore College T-Shirts on Thursday and talked about their favorite colleges. A college T-shirt and bulletin board contest was held for elementary and secondary students. Friday, Bandera Electric Coop. employees Kevin Farrell, Jim Boyd, Trisha Love, and Tim Landes shared information about electrical safety and job potential, Washington D.C. trip, and scholarships available with the electric company. They provided mock interviews with Seniors who had to furnish resumes that they had created in English IV class. Students dressed for the interviews as if it were a potential job. It was a great week, and I wish to thank all of our visitors, teachers, administrators, and of course, our students for their participation and focus on education after high school. A link on the Leakey ISD website under “Counseling” is available for more pictures of our GenerationTX week.
